ENOUGH Co-Chair Gayle Smith and Advisor Omer Ismail discussed the weekend rebel attack on a suburb of Sudan's capital Khartoum. The fighting in the capital between the rebel group, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and government forces beginning on May 9th, was a dramatic escalation of the conflict in Sudan, and the Sudanese government immediately began to retaliate. The attack complicated the already tense relationship with Chad and brings even more violence to Darfur. The call provided fresh perspectives, analysis, and recommendations on how to prevent a further deterioration of the crisis in Sudan.

Speakers included Richard Williamson, the U.S. Envoy to Sudan, discussing the current situation on the ground and addressing the issue of normalization of relations with Khartoum; Roger Winter, a former State Department Special Representative for Sudan and a member of the U.S. team that helped negotiate the CPA and an Advisor to the ENOUGH Project, discussing the breakdown of the CPA; Omer Ismail, also an Advisor to ENOUGH; Alex Meixner of the Save Darfur Coalition; Colin Thomas-Jensen, ENOUGH's Policy Advisor; and others.
